Published: 25 July 2017
The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has opened its doors for the inaugural Research Week, which began this Monday to the 30th of July, where students and their staff are showcasing their scope of work and identify areas of partnership with the business community and civil society organisations.

A number of research products, services and presentations, which touch on issues that affect the economy and society at large are being presented and showcased.

These include a system that was developed to track threatened species especially elephants and researches on climate change and adaptation in Zimbabwe.

UZ Vice Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura said there is need to adequately invest in research especially in higher learning institutions for economic development.

"Research is very critical in the economic and societal development of any nation as it reduces poverty and improves the quality of life. So there is need for strategic partnerships between research institutions, the government and civil society organisations for sustainable development," he said.

The 2017 Research Week is running under the theme: 'University of Zimbabwe - Serving the Nation Through Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships.'
