Ex-Zupco workers take salaries plea to court

FIVE former Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (Zupco) employees have sued the parastatal for over $58 000 which they are owed in salaries and benefits.

The former workers, Simukayi Chipfunde, Joshua Buruuru, Amen Chigumira, Linos Bhebhe and Felix Shezhu filed their summons against the company at the Bulawayo High Court on Tuesday through lawyers from Sengweni Legal Practice.

"The plaintiff's claim is for the payment of $58 732, 32, interest at the prescribed rate from date of issue of summons to date of full and final payment and costs of suit at an attorney-client scale," reads the summons.

In their declaration of claim, the five submitted that the amount owed by the company is for salaries and benefits that accrued to them when they were still working for the company.

"Defendant duly acknowledged such indebtedness …and [the case] is no longer a labour dispute since plaintiffs are no longer part and parcel of defendant," reads the declaration.

"Despite that fact that defendant severed ties with plaintiffs mid last year, it has shown no desire … to extinguish the debt and the plaintiffs have no other remedy than to approach the honourable court. Despite demand, the defendant has refused, failed and neglected to pay the debt."

Zupco has not yet filed a response to the summons.
