Zanu-PF Midlands Province is targeting issuing 800 000 membership cards in the province as part of its restructuring exercise.

In an interview after a provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting on Sunday, Zanu-PF Midlands provincial spokesperson Cornelius Mpereri said the province had so far registered 28 000 under the electronic membership registration exercise.

Mpereri said the electronic membership card, which contains personal details including a mugshot and electronic chip, will also be linked to the holders' bank accounts to enable automated subscriptions.

POSB will be monitoring and authorising all financial transactions performed using the debit cards which also bear account numbers.

Mpereri said the cards will also function as debit cards where members can deposit their money. He said it will also help people in rural areas to embrace plastic money.

"As a province, we have so far issued 28 000 membership cards to our members," said Mpereri.

"We are targeting about 800 000 people. Each card costs $3 and we accept all forms of payment.

"Our hope is for each member to have their card. These cards are different from the ones that we used to issue because they can be used for other financial transactions and are as good as bank cards."

Mpereri said all was set for the provincial conference which will be held on December 13 in Gweru en-route to Bulawayo for the party's National People's Conference.

"As part of our deliberations in the meeting, we have agreed to hold our provincial conference on December 13 ahead of the National People's Conference," he said.

"We are going to be accrediting those that will be attending the conference representing the province between 27 and 30 November."
