MDC won't impose candidate for by-election
Published: 25 June 2019
THE opposition MDC will not nominate any candidate for Glen View South constituency which fell vacant following the death of Morgan Tsvangirai's daughter, Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java.

Tsvangirai-Java died about a fortnight ago after being hospitalised for close to a month at a private hospital in Harare following a car accident in Kwekwe while she was returning from an MDC caucus meeting in Bulawayo.

The same accident also claimed the lives of Paul Rukanda, who was Tsvangirai-Java's campaign manager and a relative, Tafadzwa Mhundwa. Tsvangiari Java was laid to rest at Glen Forest in Harare last week.

MDC secretary-general Chalton Hwende said yesterday the party will hold primary elections for those aspiring to participate in by-elections.

"We will not nominate anyone. It is not true that we will nominate someone from the Tsvangirai family. We are going to call for primary elections.

"This is in line with our resolutions from the recently-held party congress in Gweru," said Hwende.

Apart from Glen View South, two other by-elections are expected to take place in Lupane East and Mangwe constituencies following the deaths of Sithembile Gumbo and Obedingwa Mguni of Zanu-PF respectively.

Gumbo died in a road traffic accident in April while Mguni died on Wednesday following a long battle with diabetes.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, Lupane East constituency has attracted nine candidates from various political parties and will be held on August 3.

The nine who will contest the election are Mbongeni Dube (Zanu-PF), Morgan Ndlovu (Labour Economists and African Democrats Party), Given Dube (MDC-T), Dalumuzi Khumalo (MDC Alliance), Nelson Mkandla (National Action Party), Andrew Tshaba (Mthwakazi Republic Party), Njabulo Sibanda (National Patriotic Front), Gezekile Mkhwebu (Zapu) and Alice Sibanda (National Constitutional Assembly).
