Zimasco accused of favouritism

Zimasco accused of favouritism
Published: 10 September 2013
Small-scale miners have accused top management at the chrome mining giant, Zimasco, of pushing them out of business by awarding lucrative contracts to large-scale miners.

The miners said Zimasco recently awarded a major chrome supply contract to a big mining contractor (name supplied) under unclear circumstances.

They claimed the deal could have benefited 700 workers had the contract been awarded to small-scale miners.

However, Zimasco managing director Namatai Mapfumo denied the discrimination allegations. But, according to letters written by small-scale miners, a large-scale contractor was allegedly clandestinely awarded a contract to transport chrome ore mined by small-scale miners at Valley Mine near Shurugwi to the smelting plant.
